Deck Building Contractor
Seattle, Washington
Vasa Construction LLC is a deck building contractor in Seattle, Washington, designing and building outdoor structures across the Puget Sound region. Cheap decks do not fail in July, they fail in February, quietly, at the ledger. We build on properly flashed connections and pressure-treated structure, then surface in composite, cedar, or hardwood depending on how much upkeep you want to take on. Our crews have built and rebuilt decks here for 25+ years, which means we have opened plenty of walls behind failed ledgers and know exactly what caused it. Structure is where a deck earns its life span, and it is also where the money disappears invisibly. So we show you the framing plan and the hardware schedule rather than leading with board colors, and we flash the ledger properly because that connection causes more expensive damage than every other detail combined.
Custom Deck Design and Framing
Layout starts with how you intend to use the space. Joist spans, beam sizing, footing depth, and hardware selection then follow the load, the soil, and the local code rather than a generic plan.
Composite Decking Installation
Capped composite boards ignore the rot, mildew, and splintering that our winters encourage in wood. Hidden-fastener systems leave a clean surface, and the material needs little beyond occasional washing to stay presentable.
Cedar and Hardwood Decking
Real wood still wins on warmth underfoot and appearance. Western red cedar and dense tropical hardwoods both perform well here when back-primed, properly spaced, and refinished on a sensible schedule.
Railings, Stairs, and Lighting
Guardrails and stairs carry the strictest code requirements on any deck. Correct post attachment, riser consistency, and integrated lighting turn the parts most likely to fail inspection into the parts nobody worries about.
Covered Decks and Patio Roofs
Cover is what makes outdoor space usable most of the year in this region. Attached roofs, pergolas, and open gables get flashed into the house so the addition never becomes a leak path.
Deck Repair and Resurfacing
Sound framing does not need demolishing. Replacing surface boards, resetting railings, correcting the ledger connection, and adding proper flashing can extend a structurally healthy deck for many additional years of use.

Decking Materials
We build in capped composite, western red cedar, tropical hardwood, and pressure-treated lumber. The decision comes down to how much annual maintenance you are realistically willing to do, because our winters punish neglect faster than most climates.

Capped Composite
The lowest-maintenance surface available and the best performer in sustained damp. A polymer cap resists moss, mildew, staining, and splintering entirely, and hidden fasteners leave an uninterrupted surface underfoot.
Western Red Cedar
Locally grown, naturally rot-resistant, and unmatched underfoot on a warm day. It costs less than composite up front and reaches 20 to 30 years when back-primed and refinished every year or two.
Tropical Hardwood
Ipe and similar dense species are extraordinarily durable and hold up to heavy use. They cost more, require pre-drilling and specialized fasteners, and weather to a silver gray unless oiled regularly.
Pressure-Treated Lumber
The structural workhorse under every deck we build, and a budget surface option as well. Treated framing resists rot and insects, though surface boards need sealing and will check and twist more than alternatives.

Build an Outdoor Space Made for Living
Decks are one of the few projects where the parts nobody sees decide everything about the parts everybody does. Footings sized for the soil. A ledger flashed so water travels outward. Hardware rated for the lumber it is driven into. Get those right and the surface becomes a matter of taste. Get them wrong and the boards look fine for a few seasons while the rim joist quietly rots behind the siding. Vasa Construction LLC builds from the ground up for the weather that actually arrives in Seattle, Washington. Tell us about your yard through our contact page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What decking material lasts longest in this climate?
Capped composite generally leads, resisting rot, moss, and splintering with almost no upkeep. Quality cedar performs respectably when finished regularly, and tropical hardwoods last a long time at a higher price.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Seattle?
Usually yes, particularly for decks over 30 inches above grade or attached to the house. Vasa Construction LLC handles permitting and inspections for deck projects across Seattle, Washington and nearby cities.
How long does a deck build take?
Simple ground-level structures often finish within a week. Elevated decks with stairs, railings, and covers commonly take 2 to 4 weeks, with footing inspections and weather affecting the schedule.
What actually makes a deck ledger leak?
Fastening the ledger to siding without flashing, or without a proper drainage gap behind it. Water then sits against the sheathing and rots the rim joist long before anything shows indoors.
Is a covered deck worth the extra cost here?
For most households, yes. Cover extends usable months substantially in a region where rain, not cold, limits outdoor time, and it protects the decking surface from constant saturation through the long winter months.
How often does a cedar deck need refinishing?
Every 1 to 2 years for a penetrating oil or stain, depending on exposure. South-facing surfaces and areas without cover weather faster and benefit from more frequent attention than shaded sections.
What are the signs an existing deck is unsafe?
Spongy boards, wobbling railings, rust streaks at the ledger, visible rot at post bases, and any movement underfoot. Vasa Construction LLC inspects aging decks across Seattle, Washington on request.
Can an old deck be resurfaced instead of rebuilt?
If the framing, footings, and ledger connection are all sound, yes. That inspection has to come first, because new boards over failing structure hide the actual problem and waste the material entirely.
